Tapir Valley
Morning Birding & Nature Tour

Spend the morning with the dawn chorus of the rainforest and discover Costa Rica's incredible avian diversity

Tour Overview

Experience the Dawn Chorus

Awaken your senses as you explore Tapir Valley Nature Reserve during the most active hours for wildlife. Our Morning Birding & Nature Tour begins at dawn when the forest comes alive with the calls of over 440 bird species, from colorful toucans and trogons to rare hummingbirds and the majestic crested guan.

Led by expert naturalist guides with deep knowledge of local fauna and flora, this tour takes you through diverse habitats within our reserve. You'll discover how different ecosystems support unique wildlife communities, from forest edges to dense undergrowth, streams to canopy levels.

Beyond birdwatching, you'll learn about the fascinating behaviors of other wildlife you encounter along the way—howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, agoutis, and with luck, even a glimpse of the magnificent Baird's Tapir. Our guides share insights about animal adaptations, plant-animal relationships, and the critical role each species plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Small group sizes (maximum 8 participants) ensure an intimate experience with personalized attention and optimal viewing opportunities. A light breakfast is included, featuring fresh tropical fruits and traditional Costa Rican coffee.

Essential Information

How to Prepare

What to bring and what to know for your best experience at Tapir Valley Nature Reserve

Insect Repellent

Essential for protection against mosquitoes and other insects. We recommend EPA-approved repellent with DEET or picaridin for effective protection in tropical rainforest environments.

Long Sleeves

Lightweight, breathable long-sleeved shirts provide additional protection from insects and sun exposure. Quick-dry or moisture-wicking materials are ideal for the humid rainforest climate.

Camera

Bring your camera or smartphone to capture the incredible wildlife and landscapes. Binoculars are also highly recommended for birdwatching and observing distant wildlife behavior.

Hat

A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap helps protect your face and neck from the sun during the morning hours. Look for breathable materials that won't trap heat.

Sunscreen

Even in the rainforest, UV protection is important. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) and reapply as needed, especially on exposed areas like hands and face.

PROVIDED

Boots

We provide boots for all participants as the reserve contains many wet and muddy areas. The boots ensure your comfort and safety while exploring diverse terrain. Please let us know your shoe size when booking.

Additional Tips

Water Bottle

Stay hydrated throughout the tour. We'll have water available, but bringing your own reusable bottle is recommended.

Rain Gear

A lightweight rain jacket or poncho is advisable as tropical weather can change quickly.

Comfortable Clothing

Tapir Valley is wet, humid rainforest so dress accordingly. Be prepared for rain.

Binoculars

While not required, binoculars greatly enhance your birdwatching experience.
